Thyroid disorders are conditions that affect the thyroid gland. This gland is butterfly-shaped and located in the front of the neck. The thyroid’s major role is to regulate numerous metabolic processes throughout the body.

Two of the most common thyroid diseases are Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism and as their names suggest, they are at opposite in their effects of the body’s functioning.  Hypothyroidism is a slowing down of the metabolic process, while hyperthyroidism is a speeding of up this process; both are outside of the normal metabolic functioning range.

On a global scale, a staggering 200 million people have problems with their thyroid glands, with over 50 percent remaining undiagnosed. In the US alone, according to the American Thyroid Association, more than 12 percent of the population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetimes. An estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease.
