If you’re like most Americans, you’re probably aware of the benefits of eating right. Recently, there have been multiple highly publicized efforts to get Americans to eat a healthier diet. From former First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to ban junk food and soda from school cafeterias to the fast-food giant McDonald’s public commitment to include fruits and vegetables in its meal combinations, there seems to be no lack of awareness about eating healthy.

Although numerous campaigns from a wide range of groups have attempted to raise awareness about healthy eating, not many Americans are actually eating healthy. According to a recent study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the American diet is loaded with cheese, sugar, and red meat, and people are now consuming 500 more calories than they did in the 1970s. With unhealthy eating habits being the underlying cause of diseases such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, cancer and hypertension, it’s become more important than ever for people to understand how to eat right.

But what constitutes a right diet? According to the Integrative Nutrition website, individual differences in our anatomy, body structure and metabolism have an impact on our health and the types of foods that make a person feel their best. While a certain food may be perfect for one person, it may make another feel tired and sluggish. Similarly, Casey Seidenberg, co-founder of Nourish Schools, writes in the Washington Post that each of us have unique nutritional requirements, which vary from person to person.

So, how can you determine what is the right diet for your body? Below, we’ve featured an excerpt from one of Sadhguru’s live events:

Yes. It makes sense to eat consciously, and to do all things consciously. Too many times I don't pay attention to the effect food has on the way I feel.

I saw what Sadhguru said in this video in another video. I have been seeing what foods aren't good for my body type. He makes a lot of sense. Now that I'm older I do pay closer attention to what I eat. All my life, I have stayed away from sweet things due to my father was a diabetic, but also, I realize salty foods isn't good for me either. Now that I have pulmonary issues from when I was kicked in the chest by a horse riding accident, my legs will swell up eating salty things, and since I have metal plates holding my sternum bone together, I now know salt is very bad for bones. I just finished my pulmonary rehabilitation class that I was assigned to by my doctor. I do need to lose weight, due to my injury, I wasn't able to exercise, so I gained much weight even eating right. I realize just walking can be my form of exercise, so I am doing that daily now. Hopefully, this helps me lose weight, it's more of a challenge also because I'm older now. Losing weight is a hard battle being older. I have learned to be conscience about the foods I eat.

After completing the Inner Engineering program in 2008, I was spontaneously and effortlessly unable to overeat ever again. Even more surprising - astounding really - after the BSP program I felt like I emerged in a new body. While there, Sadhguru barely mentioned food and prior to BSP I was a lifelong carnivore. I ate every kind of meat and lots of it. Loved it in fact. Had anyone tried to tell me I'd emerge from a four day program a spontaneous vegetarian - without having given it a moment's thought - I'd of said they were completely nuts. But that's exactly what came to pass, without me even realizing it at first. Back home at the grocery store I couldn't bring myself to approach the meat counter. Frankly and to my shock, I fled because all of it struck me like road-kill land Made me want to hurl lol. Repulsive. Haven't eaten meat since, nor do I ever miss it. And that was years ago. Because of Sadhguru, I have boundless energy. I effortlessly dropped 15 pounds and although I'm 64, have never felt better. Seniors should know that Isha is a veritable fountain of youth, and for the young it's a sure path to longevity. Isha is SO much more than that, of course, but see for yourself! I can't recommend it highly enough.

I've been combining 24hr Fitness Yoga with Vegan Diet and 60 minute Cardio workouts for 2 months now and it feels amazing. I've been eating meet my whole life, however once I began looking at food as energy (just like Sadhguru said "Dead food keeps you grounded and life food keeps you energized), literally everything fell into place. Quicker muscle recovery post exercise, better quality of sleep, and the list just goes on. This mans advise literally transforms you in such profound way if you simply heed his words. If only I've known this sooner!
