How can you be happy when situations around you are not going well? Sadhguru emphasizes that the source of your happiness stems from within but right now anybody can “hijack your happiness.”
|Happiness Quotes“Your wellness and your illness, your joy and your misery, all come from within. If you want wellbeing, it is time to turn inward.” – Sadhguru
“Whatever happens, the question is, are you becoming a better human being – more stable, more joyful, more clear within yourself?” – Sadhguru
“Neither health nor joy can be created from outside. There may be external stimuli, but essentially, both come from within.” – Sadhguru
“If you want to know whether you are moving forward in life, just see if you are a little more joyful today than you were yesterday.” – Sadhguru
“If you care for people around you, you must make yourself into a person they enjoy being with.” – Sadhguru
The Theory of Happiness
Happiness plays a large part in our lives. After all, who doesn’t want to be happy? Even the United Nations deemed it to be of importance. It declared March 20th to be the International Day of Happiness, to recognize the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals.
However, at best, happiness is a very fuzzy concept. Ask several people what makes them happy and you will get several different answers. Psychologists and other scientists have not been able to pinpoint the hows and whys of happiness, as they often disagree in their theories.
Sadhguru offers us insight into happiness. Below is an excerpt from one of Sadhguru’s talks:

Don’t Enslave Your Happiness to Others
Sadhguru: It does not matter what is the nature of your activity, essentially you are in pursuit of happiness. But this happiness has been so elusive.
If my boss is yelling at me, how can I be blissful? If my wife is not cooperating with me, how can I be blissful? If my bank balance is zero, how can I become blissful.” These are all life situations, and maybe things have gone out of control and turned unpleasant for you. It does not matter how carefully you walk through this life, invariably you will step into some unpleasantness and difficulties. So, how is it possible to de-link the outside factors and be at peace? If you look at your own life’s experience, whenever happiness happened to you, it didn’t matter what the stimulus was. Maybe, you watched the sunrise and you became very joyful; maybe you heard some music and you became very joyful; maybe you achieved some success and you were joyful. Remember that whenever you happened to be joyful, it always bubbled up from within you. It never rained upon you from somewhere else.
That shows very clearly that the very source of happiness is right within you, but the stimulus is outside. Therefore, the choice has to be yours: whether you want to keep the stimulus outside or you want to import it into you. The source of happiness is within you but if the switch for it is in somebody else’s hands, they can turn it on or turn it off. Anybody can make you unhappy. Similarly, any situation can hijack your happiness at any moment.
If your very way of being is deeply enslaved to the external situation, then that is the worst form of slavery. If you have to liberate yourself from this horrible form of slavery, then the first and foremost thing is that you need to understand that the basis of your experience is without, and not outside. One has to understand it and correct one’s way of living life accordingly.

Does Happiness Make You Smarter?
Remaining joyful and happy for a period of 24 hours has been scientifically proven to have a drastically positive effect on one’s brain activity. Even though physical laws prevent our brains from further development, in this conversation Sadhguru and Kathleen Koch discuss various techniques, such as properly executed yoga practices, which can help us learn how to use our brains better and better.
Misery or Joy is Your Choice
Sadhguru reminds us that our experience of life is determined by the way we are, not what’s around us. Yoga practices, he explains, simply provides an access for an experiential realization of this truth and find happiness.
Suffering or Joy – You Choose!
At a memorial event in California, Sadhguru speaks about the transformation that one can experience through Inner Engineering. He explains that life is not suffering, nor joy, but simple there. If one learns to ride it, it feels fantastic, but if one is crushed by it, then it feels terrible.
Life is Ticking Away – Time to Smile!
What is the most important thing in your life right now? Sadhguru reminds us, only because we are alive, everything else became important. Life is constantly ticking away – but that means it’s time to smile, not frown! If we can be 100% alive every moment, then we can live in happiness and exuberantly by our own nature.
